Olympia Greece Dated 776 BC, the site of the first Greek Olympics…
Below pictured is the running track, a gymnasium, Temple of Hercules, wrestling arena, javelin throw, the chariot race track, and all of the other events and amenities needed for the event that took place every 4 years from 776 BC - 393 AD. Women were not permitted to participate in or observe the games. Only one singular winner of an event received a crown of olive leaves, and much later one single silver coin.
Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned the games in 393 AD (during the Roman occupation) in order to promote Christianity. He deemed the games equivalent to paganism and had them done away with.
