Our eastern hybrid wolf coyote
Over the past decade, our local coyote pack has made its presence known on summer nights, their yipping and howling echoing in the distance under the moonlight.
Occasionally, at any time of year, lone coyotes or small groups would boldly wander through our subdivision, likely in search of food. On my walks and hikes, I’ve spotted them as far west as the Old Welland Canal, around Firemen’s Park, near and east of the Eagle Valley Golf Course, and along the Niagara Parkway. I’ve often wondered whether we’re dealing with multiple packs or if they roam a particularly large territory.
Golfers in the area have mentioned seeing them up close, and it seems some may have even offered them snacks like dog biscuits or energy bars.
This year, a mated pair appears to have taken up residence near the Haulage Trail. Their den is in the bush outside the fence on the south side of the new Terravita Subdivision.
The male has been identified as an Eastern Hybrid Wolf-Coyote. He has a dog-like appearance and shows the typical mix of caution and curiosity, particularly around locals walking leashed dogs. The female, on the other hand, has a more traditional coyote look.
